What is an asana ?
An asana is translated as “attitude .”
The word is derived from the Sanskrit root “AS” which means stay – sit – or remain in a certain way.
Patanjali Yoga Sutra describes the two main qualities of an asana namely :

Sthira and SUKHA
Sthira means steadfastness and alertness .
Sukha refers to the ability to stay comfortable in a certain position Both of these qualities must be present at the execution of the attitude whatsoever. Still Sukha still Sthira are present as we are in the lotus position trying to sit and then have to stretch our aching legs . When these two qualities are not present, then we can not speak of an asana . We are working to bring both go Sthira ( steadfastness ) and Sukha ( softness ) in our asana practice and bring about the same time. Progression To develop our asanas , the qualities Sthira and Sukha is therefore important to understand the preparatory exercises of our body insight , our breathing and focus on the asana we want to execute .
